Porthole Vase

The body is bored deeply to hold a removable glass insert, keeping water away from the wood while preserving the appearance of a solid wooden form. Small portholes of varying sizes punctuate the sides, creating shifting views through the piece and breaking up its otherwise quiet mass.

Each face is hand planed into subtly asymmetrical facets, so the form changes as it turns and catches the light differently from every angle.

Its narrow opening makes it well suited to nageire, a less formal style of ikebana traditionally arranged in tall, narrow-mouthed vessels and sometimes using only a single flower or branch. But it works equally well with whatever cutting happens to be in season.
