Kumiko Wall Panel

The sakura pattern — named for the cherry blossom, Japan’s most beloved symbol of fleeting beauty — is among the most demanding in the kumiko tradition. Each flower emerges from a field of mitsugumite triangles, its petals formed by precisely angled pieces fitted without glue or fasteners. The two-tone palette here, Port Orford cedar for the ground lattice and Western red cedar for the blossoms, makes the pattern legible across the room while rewarding close inspection with the warmth of the contrasting grains.

The panel is backed by Warlon, a translucent material that softens the shadow play behind the lattice and gives the piece a luminous quality in raking light. Hung near a window, the panel becomes something different at different hours of the day.

At 23 inches wide by 14 inches high, the panel suits a hallway, a study, or any wall where a quiet, contemplative object is welcome. Paper and wood species can be varied to order.
